What is Botox®?

Botox® is an injectable drug, used for many medical treatments. It was accidentally discovered by treating strabismus (cross-eyedness). It was noted that the wrinkles around the eyes (crow's feet) would temporarily vanish. That started the beginning of a new era for minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. The FDA approved Botox® for the use of moderate to severe forehead wrinkles. We use Botox® to temporarily reduce crow's feet, horizontal forehead lines, elevate the brows, diminish the "ropes" on the neck, and among others. Another added benefit for using Botox® is to treat migraines and also for hyperhydrosis or excessive sweating of the palms of the hands and under the arms.

Why do we get wrinkles?

When we talk, laugh, smile, frown, squint, cry and so on, we activate muscles in our face that give us these facial expressions. With these repeated muscle movements, time and age, the skin on the top of the muscles become less elastic and the wrinkles becomes more apparent even without movement.

How does Botox® work?

Once the Botox® is injected into the desired area, the injected muscle can no longer contract causing the wrinkles to relax and soften. This reduces the appearance of moderate to severe lines and wrinkles temporarily.

How long does Botox® last?

Remember that Botox® is a temporary cosmetic treatment used to relax the muscles that form lines or wrinkles and it is not permanent. Botox® does not fill in wrinkles. The maximum amount of time that Botox® can last is 6 months. After treatment, the individual can see the full effects 3 to 10 days after injection and can last 3 to 4 months on average. Although after an individual has had several subsequent Botox® injections, the treatment can last longer as the muscles that are relaxed can "unlearn" the muscle movements.

What are Facial Fillers?

Fillers help to fill in wrinkles, diminish facial lines, depressions on the face, and restore volume and fullness in the face. Sometimes these lines can be injected on other parts of the body, even the hands.

As we age, the skin on our face starts to stretch and thin out, we also naturally lose subcutaneous fat. This causes the facial muscles to work closer to our skin, enhancing the appearance of smile lines, crows feet and so on.

How do Facial Fillers work?

Unlike Botox® injections that relax the muscle, Facial Fillers are directly injected into the skin with the purpose of plumping and filling the affected area. The injectable facial filler treatment provides immediate improvement to the desired area of treatment.

How long do Facial Fillers work?

Facial Fillers can last anywhere between 4 months to more than 1 year, depending on the type of filler. Not every wrinkle-filler is the right type for every wrinkle on the body.
